Australia, by Mike and David Atterton

Australia

With my cork hat on, and a beer in my hand,
I think about Australia, this great big barren land
There’s kookaburras and ‘cook-a-barbie’ and Captain Cook as well
And anywhere around the world, if you’re Aussie, they can tell.

I love my home Australia, white sands for k’s and k’s
With tons of time to soak up sun on long, hot summers’ days
Our beaches are so famous, Bondi, Surfers and the rest
Clean blue water, clear blue skies and girls that are the best

Just inland, not far away, the great outback does start
With echidnas, emus and kangaroos part of our nation’s heart
The cuddly koala, the platypus, unique Australian creatures
With care they will remain some of our country’s features

We’re famous for our famous folk, Dawn, The Don and Hoges
Greg Norman, Namatjira, but yes we have some rogues
Ned Kelly, Captain Starlight and others who live today
Some have fled Australia, and left bills behind to pay

Cricket is our summer sport, we’re fierce, without a peer
We have a bet, we play the game and then we have a beer
And don’t forget that funny ball, it bounces every way
I’m talking about footy, a game that thousands play

We laugh a lot; we joke a lot, but always have a go
And if there’s strife and you want some help, it’s an Aussie you need to know
An island continent is where we live, twenty million or so to date
And something else that we all share, Cobber, you’re a mate!

And they are mates, our Asian friends, the Greeks, Italians too
There’s many who make Australia, it’s not just me and you
A wonderful diverse group wouldn’t you agree?
Living here together, lucky country of the free.
